Palm Springs: A Classic Destination

Palm Springs has been the destination of the stars since the 1920's. It has also been a hub of architectural innovation and experimentation. It's a desert oasis full of historic resorts, a massive concentration of mid-century modern architecture, and world-class shopping and recreation.

Stay

I stayed at the Colony Palms Hotel- a charming 1930's Spanish colonial resort located just a block away from the main design district of the city. It's an oasis within an oasis. The lush courtyard provides a peaceful respite and offers delicious food at the Purple Palm Restaurant. They also provide bikes for a great way to see the city and take in the architecture.

Where She Wore Tip: For a truly peaceful getaway, splurge and stay in one of the hotel's Casitas. You'll get a private patio and outdoor tub, in addition to the artfully designed suite.

See

I found that the best way to enjoy Palm Springs was by walking or biking. I stumbled upon the Robo Lights Sculpture Garden while riding around the city. You can also tour the sculpture garden with an appointment and the holiday light show is not to be missed.

Despite the mid-century modern architecture being my main draw to Palm Springs, I didn't do much research on which houses and buildings to see. Again, I just like wandering around and stumbling upon whatever I happen to. That being said, the Kaufmann House (the same Kaufmann family that commissioned Fallingwater), is a must-see on my list. My favorite neighborhood in Palm Springs is adjacent to the Kauffman House and is called Vista Las Palmas. It's filled with large Alexander homes with unobstructed mountain views. Old Las Palmas borders Vista Las Palmas and is one of the most luxurious neighborhoods in the city. The two Palmas neighborhoods are only a 10-minute bike ride from the Colony Palms Hotel.

If you want a getaway from your getaway, Joshua Tree National Park is about an hour drive northeast of Palm Springs. Entering the park is like landing on another planet. The rock formations and namesake Joshua Trees are truly otherworldly,

Where She Wore Tip: Take a short trip off of the paved road and walk to Skull Rock- it looks straight out of Lion King!

Palm Springs is the perfect destination for a little R&R. Its 50's charm, laid-back lifestyle, and vibrant architecture and art scene make it one of my favorite getaways. If you don't trust me, take a cue from Frank Sinatra.
